Special allocation demanded for Khulna dev

Speakers at an hour-long human chain in the Khulna city on Saturday demanded special allocation in the upcoming budget for the development of the Khulna region and rehabilitation of the cyclone Aila-affected people.
A cross-section of people including representatives from all political, socio-cultural and professional organizations in Khulna took part in the programme at Picture Palace Crossing from 11:00am.
The Greater Khulna Development Coordination Action Committee arranged the human chain, also demanding immediate reconstruction of Aila-damaged embankments, modernisation of Mongla seaport and Bhomra land port, establishing modern railway station and airport in Khulna, opening all the closed mills of the zone, running the Khulna WASA fully and a complete TV centre in Khulna.
The demands also include adequate allocation for supplying gas to the southwestern districts, development of tourist industry and conserving the Sundarban, modernisation of Khulna district and divisional stadium, solving waterlogging problem in the Khulna city and a special allocation for Khulna City Corporation.
The speakers said since the independence of the country in 1971, the people of the southwestern have remained deprived of development.
Chaired by GKDCAC president Liakat Ali, the gathering at the human chain was addressed by the committee secretary general Hayder Gazi Salahuddin Runu, Sheikh Harunur Rashid and Mizanur Rahman Mizan of Awami League, M Nurul Islam and Shafiqul Alam Mona of BNP, SA Rashid of Communist Party of Bangladesh, Khalid Hossain of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal, Jahangir Alam Sabuj of Workers Party, Fazlur Rahman of National Awami Party, Nagarik Forum chairperson Sheikh Abdul Quayum, the Daily Tribune editor Begum Ferdausi Ali, Khulna Press Club president Ahmad Ali Khan and general secretary SM Zahid Hossain, Abdul Mannan of Bangladesh Jute Association and NGO personality Quazi Wahiduzzaman, among
others.
